Introduction:

What you are holding right now in your hands (or just plain reading, if you're looking at the computer) is the Premiere Issue (READ: A Collector's Item). Originally, the plan was to come out with the e-zine/website first and just to put out a hardcopy version with selected articles and a condensed format. Unfortunately, our webmaster and HXC Associate Editor, Erick Fabian, went soul-searching right after we had finished the draft/rough version of By|For The People Zine Online and this kinda coincided with my getting a job as a customer service associate at eTelecare Int'l back in September 2001. Thank God (JAH) that I have some time left to spare in order for me to start doing this again concentrating on my writing as well as reestablishing myself in the underground community - including getting Erick back to be on speaking terms with me again.

Before I let you read the rest of what the zine/ezine is all about, the most important thing to understand about it is that this zine/ezine should be looked at as a means to an end rather than the goal or the end in itself. By|For is about documenting and promoting a conscious way of living. Essentially, while By|For on the surface looks cultural, it is actually a/n zine/ezine about complete transformation: personally, socially, culturally, politically, and spiritually. This zine/ezine isn't trying to promote any set dogma of politics, art, or religion. What we do is share a bunch of core beliefs which we put forth in this zine/ezine. It is really important for us to promote the idea of "community" - people living, celebrating, and fighting together (not against each other). Skateboarding, bmx, and punk/hxc as well as hip-hop all started out with a communal vibe at the core of what they were about. The same goes for Christian communal movements from which this zine/ezine's spirituality takes its inspiration from.

The following text begins with the actual introduction which you will find in the final draft of the online version - which you're probably reading now as we go along - and the rest of this article will deal mostly about what will appear on the website (ezine) and/or zine. -- Migs Amper, Managing & Senior Editor (or simply: The Ed)

Welcome to By|For The People Zine, the only direct initiative interactive zine/ezine for the underground extreme lifestyle community of independent people: skateboarders, bmx riders, hardcore/punks & all true JAHpeople out there - all those from the urban street counterculture who go against the flow of mainstream pop culture. By|For The People stands for "By The People, For The People" - and it is truly "OF The People" as well. Yes, this is your zine/ezine because it is what YOU (our readers) make of it. You are now officially a part of this community.

By|For is the official community zine/ezine of the one and only HeadFirst Collective, born out of Migs Amper's and Erick Fabian's shared vision of bring together open-minded people who are actively searching for their true purpose & meaning in life - people who seek the TRUTH.

In order to find the "truth", people not only need to have open minds but to literally have to open their eyes as well - be aware of what's going on around you. Not everything that has been taught to you could simply be regarded as the truth. We each have to investigate for ourselves all information that had been forced into our brains so that we could each determine for ourselves whether such information (which is the sum total of each individual's education) is true or otherwise.

After doing countless articles for our other yet to be published zines (namely: "Talk is Cheap" , "Standstill" Zine, "CoExist" Skate & BMX Zine, "Punklet" mini-Punk Planet Wannabe Zine, and "We Can Tell You How We Made It But Then We'd Have To KIll You" Life-In-General Zine), Erick and myself were so exhausted from writing & going to shows as well as DIY conventions and other direct-action initiatives that people were expecting us to come to a complete burnout and fatigue. But because of our fierce belief in what we are doing, it kept us motivated to go on and go do this zine/ezine together.

Most of the topics that we write about in our featured articles are those that are meant to raise people's eyebrows. It is this zine/ezine's intent to arouse the intellect and raise issues that affect/concern our society. We hope that people do find the content of this zine/ezine - albeit being the honest truth as we believe it to be - as "utterly disturbing" so to speak. It is our hope that those jaded on socio-polictical & economic issues as well as those who reject authentic spirituality would stir restlessly in their beds at night after reading what we write about, pondering about the validity of whatever we put forth in this zine/ezine. We dare our readers to come out of their comfort zones and become involved in the worthwhile endeavor to help others find the truth.

Don't like the takes in this zine/ezine? Please write in!!! By|For is setting aside space for our mail section each release so you may speak your mind about anything you need to get off your chests or something you feel needs to be voiced out and be heard. This zine/ezine reflects the opinions of the writer one hundred percent and of his/her right to freedom of speech. Whether you are a skateboarder, bmx rider, promoter, manufacturer, retailer, mailorder shop owner, punk/hxc artist, fellow zine maker, DIY enthusiast, skatepark operator, network marketer, life insurance agent, Christian or atheist or whatever, it doesn't matter to us here at By|For at all. To us it makes no difference who or what you are because we are all just spokes in this wheel of a truth-seeking community, and the actions of each reflect in the reactions of others. Everyone wants to be heard, so we don't censor ideas (though we may edit out cuss words for the sake of decency) and we don't judge you. We merely do our best to listen to (or "read" for that matter) what you have to say, then we contemplate. We simply ask that you do the same. Feel free to add your voice to the fray. It's time we end all conflicts by breaking down barriers brought about by race, creed and religion.

Enjoy reading! Enjoy writing your own articles to send to this zine/ezine most of all. Sex, drugs and rock'n roll isn't the way to enjoy our God-given freedom to experience life the way He intended for us to. Skate and destroy. Live to ride, ride to live. Promote cause-driven positive punk/hxc music. Pity the fool (Psalm 14:01). JAH rules!

Disclaimer:

The Salem Witch Trials were an atrocity that was perpetuated by ignorance and fear. Throughout mankind's short history, many such atrocities have occurred and almost always there is one simple motivation behind them: the need to dominate and gain omnipotent power by controlling the actions of the masses. And that's not as difficult as one might think; just look at the case of what's happenning in most religious organizations today that are "shepherded" by their authoritarian ministers/religios leaders. For the most part, the masses can be controlled through one of two ways or channels: Ego or Fear.

Convince them that there is a need to fear (e.g.: "You're going to suffer in hellfire!") and then show them how you're able to protect them (e.g: "Just accept Jesus Christ and do everythign I say and you'll be fine."). This is called the "Fear Factor (or Method)".

Or appeal to their egos and convince them that you control thje things that will make them powerful, cool or rich. This is calledthe "Ego Method" of controlling people.

Either path will lead to your own ultimate control over other people because you have what they have been led to believe that they need. These are time proven methods successfully used by those fortunate enough to have the ability to speak to the masses and influence how the masses view the world around them.

Long ago, the power was in the hands of organized religion, which primarily used the Fear Factor/Method: fear of excommunication and even fear of being put to death itself. Later, this power was transferred into the hands of government, which also used the Fear Method (e.g.: fear of chaos, war or religious control).

In our generation, this ability has been in the hands of men who control the airwaves (TV and radio) and almost every other of media and entertainment that exists, including books, pop art, pop music, and the seemingly innocent theme parks. These men primarily focus on the Ego Method, also known as MARKETING.

But with the new millenium comes a new era and now the Internet is breaking through, competing with the power that these men have held over the masses for the last half century. They will fight hard and will use every means necessary to ensure that they do not lose your attention. Nonetheless, there wil be a changing of the guard. Information will become readily available to you from different sources and the "facts" will become even more blurred and may even appear more contradictory than they have ever been. Truth may become harder to find... but at least, through the Internet, each and every one of us is afforded a voice and the ability to speak to the masses. So, yes...TRUTH will and can exist. Truth will prevail!

Just remember: Question everything and believe nothing that you have not witnessed first hand. Question all motives behind what you hear and see. Do not help to perpetuate that which you do not know for sure to be TRUTH.

Submit to By|For:

This zine/ezine serves to document and aid the worldwide punk/hxc & warrior movements as well as the underground skateboarding and bmx scenes. In order to have the most complete international and up-to-the-minute coverage of these scenes, we need help from contributors around the world like you!

Letters:

We would like to hear from you. We will regularly post/print letters from our readers/subscribers/members and welcome all feedback on anything featured in this zine/ezine or otherwise important to the punk/hxc movement, to the greater struggle against tyranny, to skateboarding, to bmx riding, and to the quest for truth.

Opinion Pieces:

Aside form periodic editorials from the By|For editorial staff, this section is open for general contributions of a nature relevant to the content of this zine. In particular, we are looking for well-written, in-depth, and researched pieces for this section that concern current issues and events in skateboarding, bmx riding, the punk/hxc movement, and authentic spirituality.

Feature Articles:

We will run well-written articles of a social or political nature (yes, socio-political issues also exist within the skateboarding, bmx riding and the theological realms) that may not fall into our regular sections. All articles sent to us via email or snail mail are welcome, but we will only print/post ones that we feel are the most pertinent to the readers of this zine/ezine.

Scene Reports:

We encourage people to write about what's going on in their area. Please be as detailed as possible and provide us with addresses along with the names of skateboarders, bmx riders, hxc/punk artists, event promoters, zines and their publishers/editors, retailers, manufacturers, JAHwarriors and do-it-yourselfers. Let us in on your local events and happenings, who's involved, and with what cause do you all stand for. We need information on venues or spots, shops, mailorder distros, the indie labels, etc. We also would like information on political activities that members of the community are involved in. Stick to the facts. Our readers can be trusted to form their own opinions. People like to learn, but they dislike the feeling of being told what to think. This zine/ezine does not publish hearsay. Either what you plan to write us about is a fact or it is not. Find out for yourself first before submitting. If you consider yourself an expert on a subject matter & plan to put into effect esoteric terms or high-flown jargon, we will puncture your inflated ego & bring you back down to earth. It is our business to make ourselves understood. Oh, by the way, don't forget to send us (digital) photos!

Protest or Resistance:

This is basically our news and protest section. Send us information about the groups you may be involved with - we are looking for information about squats (not "squatters" in the Filipino context!), gig collectives, free spaces, direct action groups, etc. - which must somehow relate to the subject matters covered in this zine/ezine's articles. We are also interested in the overall coverage of socio-political events in your area and the up-to-the-minute news of resistance against facism and all forms of oppression. We also stress the need for your submitted articles to be well-researched and fact-based. The first test of every article is truth and accuracy. Note: Submissions may be sent via email to: byformedia@yahoo.com.

Advertising/Contributions:

We run a printed version of this ezine - if you're not holding it already - the contents of which are selections found on the website: http://byforthepeoplezine.multiply.com. Other than the usual means of distribution via subscription & newsstand sales, we promote the zine by sending complimentary copies to potential subscribers and/or newsstand distributors. We also send copies, by special request, to readers for research purposes (as resource material), reaching a worldwide audience as our mailing list adds more names. We would like to appeal to independent entrepreneurs, non-government organizations, socio-civic groups and indie labels to support our efforts in getting the message out by placing your ads in this e/zine and/or by sending your financial contributions to our mailing address.

Deadlines:

Ad deadline for our zine is every end of the quarter of the current year. All other forms of contribution (e.g., food, demo tapes, 7" vinyls, mini-CDs, DVDs, etc...) will be accepted wholeheartedly for our review, if and when applicable. Article contributions will be accepted for publication in the next issue going to press. Refer to "Ad Info" for closing dates.

Appeal for Funds:

To print and distribute copies of each issue of By|For The People e/Zine costs around Php35,000 or roughly US$700. We can only continue putting out the e/zine and maintain the website if you, our loyal readers, give donations. Please make cheques or money orders out to: By The People For The People e/Zine c/o Michael Anthony Beltran Amper (please refer to our mailing address below) or transfer funds from your personal bank account over to our International Exchange Bank (iBank) South Triangle branch savings account # : 024-16-68219 or to our EquitablePCI Bank The Enterprise Center branch savings account # : 0476-00451-9 or to our Philippine National Bank (PNB) Salcedo Village branch current account # : 294-810937-1.

By The People For the People e/Zine texts are usually created from multiple editions, all of which are in the Public Domain in the Philippines and the United States, unless a copyright notice is included. Therefore, we do NOT keep these printed sources in compliance with any particular paper edition, usually otherwise.
We are now trying to release all our e/zines one month in advance of the official release dates, for time for better editing.

Please note: neither this list nor its contents are final till midnight of the last day of the month of any such announcement. The official release date of all By|For The People e/Zine texts is at Midnight, Manila Time, of the last day of the stated month. A preliminary version may often be posted for suggestion, comment and editing by those who wish to do so. To be sure you have an up to date first edition [xxxxx10x.xxx] please check file sizes in the first week of the next month. Since our ftp program has a bug in it that scrambles the date [tried to fix and failed] a look at the file size will have to do, but we will try to see a new copy has at least one byte more or less.

Information about By|For The People e/Zine (one page)

We produce about two million dollars for each hour we work. The fifty hours is one conservative estimate for how long it we take to get any etext selected, entered, proofread, edited, copyright searched and analyzed, the copyright letters written, etc. This projected audience is one hundred million readers. If our value per text is nominally estimated at one dollar then we produce $2 million dollars per hour this year as we release thirty-two text files per month, or 384 more By|For The People e/Zine texts in 2005 for a total of 1000+. If these reach just 10% of the computerized population, then the total should reach over 100 billion By|For The People e/Zine texts given away.

The Goal of By|For The People e/Zine is to Give Away One Trillion text Files by the December 31, 2010. [10,000 x 100,000,000=Trillion] This is ten thousand titles each to one hundred million readers, which is only 10% of the present number of computer users 10 years ago. By 2001, a few years back, there should have been at least twice as many computer users as that, so it will require us reaching less than 5% of the users in 2010.

We need your donations more than ever!

All donations should be made to "By|For The People e/Zine": and are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.

We will never print major label ads (the best you major label crooks could do is to send us your artists' material for our review plus a little "donation" and we'll see what we can work out for you) or any ad that we feel is irrelevant to the content of this zine/ezine. Please send payment (cheque or money order only) with your ad and try to make it the right size. All approved ads will make it in the zine/ezine. Ads not received by the deadline will get in, but you have no say as to what issue it might appear. Any ad received after the deadline may run in the following issue, but that is not a guarantee. If you're interested to become an investor, business partner, or even just as a donor, we welcome your inquiries by sending us your emails to moshpitsk8prks@yahoo.com or by visiting http://moshpitsk8prks.multiply.com to post your messages. We are also calling interested parties such as future retail shop tenants to email us as well as pledge your support. We need a skate/bike/outdoor sports shop, in-house cafeteria, vegetarian grocery store, medical clinic, fitness gym, sportclimbing wall, billiards & arcade game hall, clothing & accessories shop, newsstand & zine publishing shop, a network gaming & internet cafe, mobile sounds crew, DJ booth, recording studio, record bar & mailorder distro shop, etc, to complete the concept of MoshPit Skateparks. A machine shop or even a tattoo & body-piercing parlor are also welcome skatepark features to make MoshPit Skateparks a true one-stop shop operation. These are necessary to help create more job opportunities for undergrounders like yourself. We exist to further the cause of professionalizing the "extreme sports" scene here in the Philippines. Skateboard and BMX companies, etc., are welcome to submit their proposals for helping us make this a reality for all the punk riders here in the Philippines.
